Council cleaned up. A great effort!

Thank you to everyone who helped with our “Clean up Darebin Council’ campaign – including letter-boxing 33,000 scorecards. Great effort!
      It's going to be a much more diverse council than the last one – hopefully one which will stand up to the developers and re-join the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action.
      The affiliations given by the nine successful candidates in their 150 word statements were: ALP 4, independents 3, Greens 1, and Liberal 1. Our previous council consisted of eight ALP councillors and one Greens.
     But should we count Angela Villela as ALP or independent? She did not declare her ALP membership in her 150 word statement, only in her interview with the Preston Leader. How many of those voting for her thought she was an independent? If you count her as ALP then our new council consists of ALP 5, independents 2, Greens 1 and Liberals 1. Still a lot more diverse than the council was before.

     Here are the winning candidates with their primary vote percentages:
  • Rucker - Trent McCarthy 25.38% (Greens), Steven Tsitas 15.89% (ALP),Oliver Walsh 5.86% (Liberal)
  • Cazaly - Vince Fontana (ALP), Julie Williams (independent), Bo Li 8.88% (independent)
  • Latrobe - Gaetano Greco 23.95% (ALP), Tim Lawrence 20.87% (ALP), Angela Villela 7.64% (independent/ undeclared ALP)
The candidates who didn't get elected, despite having a higher primary vote percentage than someone who did get elected were:
  • In Rucker, David Redfearn (ALP), who polled 9.73%, beaten by Oliver Walsh (Liberal) with 5.86%
  • In Rucker Andrew Longmire (independent), who polled 6%, beaten by Oliver Walsh (Liberal) with 5.86%
  • In Cazaly Rose Ljubicic (Greens) who polled 10.27% beaten by Julie Williams (independent) with 10.1% and Bo Li (independent) with 8.88%,
Other near misses:
  • In Cazaly, Susan Rennie (independent) who polled 8.53% but was beaten by Julie Williams (independent in ALP preference cluster group) with 10.1% and Bo Li (independent) with 8.88%; and
  • In Latrobe, Jeremy Graham (Greens) who polled 7.52% but was beaten by Angela Villela (undeclared ALP in ALP preference cluster with Greco) on 7.64%
The tables below show the results for the candidates in each ward, grouped by their preferencing clusters. The totals for each of the clusters are as follows:
  • Greens/Greens preferencing independents - Rucker 38.42%, Cazaly 37.92%, Latrobe 23.97%;
  • ALP/ALP preferencing independents - Rucker 33.75%, Cazaly 45.81%, Latrobe 76.02%;
  • Liberals/Liberal preferencing independents - Rucker 27.83%, Cazaly 16.27%, Latrobe no candidates.
[For the tables below, and the above totals, the three candidates who had mixed preferencing were grouped by who their preferences flowed to first not by who their preferences flowed from.]
